Nature Club

In order to inculcate among the students the need for conservation and preservation of nature, a nature club has been functioning in the College. The club organises nature study camps, treckings, visits to forests, and conducts essay and quiz competitions to propagate the messsage among the students.

  • GREEN DAY CELEBRATION

Green day celebration o f St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur, was held on 3rd September 2019 with the co-operation of Department of Botany and nature club. Mr. K K Sajeev, Circle Inspector of cyber cell, inaugurated the ceremony and delivered the key note address. Principal, Dr. Joy K L delivered the presidential address and Vice Principal, Rev. Dr. Martin Kolabrath emphasized about the relevance of protecting Mother Nature. Head of the department, Dr. Vimala Jose, introduced the three new plans to be executed under the guidance of department of Botany and Nature club. The three new plans were “Haritha gruham”, a project for promoting vegetable gardening, Conservation of Kulavetty Trees and cleaning of Canal of Vellanikara. All the programme details were described by the concerned coordinators. A video was presented on the theme of conservation of Nature and as a symbol of conservation of trees were made.

  • CONSERVATION OF SYZYGIUM TRAVANCORICUM THROUGH CHETTUPUZHA

St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur as an extension programme with the cooperation of Carmalamatha church Chettupuzha, Nature club, Birds club international on 15th September 2019 conducted a programme for the conservation of critically endangered species Syzygium travancoricum at Carmalamatha church Chettupuzha. Adv. M K Mukundan , opposition leader of Thrissur corporation inaugurated the function. Dr. Joy K L, Principal St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur was the chief guest. Rev. Dr. Bobby Tharakkunnel, vicar Carmalamatha church Chettupuzha, presided the function. Under the guidance of Dr. Anto P V, Assistant Professor, St. Thomas College (Autonomous) , Thrissur, the seedling were raised at St. Thomas College ad plant lets were planted in the houses of Kole regions of Chettupuzha under Thrissur corporation . The Sunday catechism students of Carmalamatha church and students of St. Thomas College and nature club members were a part of the programme.

  • Planting Kulavetty trees at Kerala Institute of Local Administration

Along with Botany Department of St. Thomas College Thrissur, Nature club members planted Kulavetty trees  at KILA. Campus on 6/11/19. It was inaugurated by Dr. Joy Elamon, Director of KILA. Office Administrator of KILA, Babu sir was presented at the time of inauguration. Nature club convenor Dr. Anto P V , Dr. Joby Paul and MSc Botany students and Nature club members were took initiation for the conservation programme.

  • Police Dog Exhibition

An exhibition of trained Dogs from state dog training school of Kerala Police Academy, Thrissur was conducted at St. Thomas college Thrissuron 4th November 2019 in association with Nature club of the college. Specially trained 8 dogs give demonstration to the students on the detection of nercotic drugs. As a part of the training programme, there were special demonstration on basic obedience, luggage, body and building search. 15 police officers and 8 Labrador dogs participated in the programme under the guidance of inspector Ramesh. Principal Dr. Joy K L, Vice principal Dr. Joby Thomas, Dr. Mejoy Jose, Convener, Dr. Anto P V , Dr. Joyce Jose, Dr. Rani Jasmine, Nature club student codinator Mr. Ferdinant were the other dignitaries who gave support  and guidance  for this programme. Students and teachers got  a fruit full experience through this programme.

  • Elavally  G. P.  Kulavetty tree planting

Planting of Kulavetty trees was inaugurated by Agricultural state minister,  Adv. V S Sunilkumar , at Elavally grama Panchayath on 28/2/2020, 8 Am.  Manloor MLA , Mr. Murali Perunelly presided the programme. Panchayath officials and elected members and Panchayath president were participated and felicitated for the programme. NSS students and teachers of Elavally GHSS and Elavally panchayath Mahathmaghandi  thozhlurappu programme members were also present in the programme. St. Thomas College Asst. Prof. Dr. Anto P V provided technical support and awareness programme regarding the soil and water conservation through kulavetty trees. The motto of Nature club and Botany Department of St Thomas college ,“soil and water conservation through kulavetty trees”, extended to third local body of  Thrissur District in 2019-2020 academic year. About 50 seedlings of trees planted there. Firstly it become fruitful at Chettupuzha, Thrissur Corporation, secondly at ollukara Block Panchayath and thirdly at Elavally Grama Panchayath.

  • Planting Kulavetty trees at vellanipacha

In association with ollukara Block Panchayath 50 kulavetty tree saplings were planted at “Vellayanipacha forest” on 5/12/19. This programme was inaugurated by I S Umadevi, Ollukara Block Panchayath president. Smt. K V Anitha, president, Panancherry gramapanchayath, Smt. Susamma, BDO, Ollukara, Mr. Shiju, Forest officer, Dr. Anto P V, Convener Nature Club and Mahathmaghandi  thozhlurappu programme members were also present in the programme. Vellayanipacha a marshy area in the deep forest under Pattikkad range.This critically endangered species (Syzygium travancoricum) prefer the low level marshy area for its perpetuation. This plant has capacity to grow in water filled areas, so it can resist the land sliding and flood along with climatic change. The nature club members were take care of seedlings of kulavetty trees at early stages. This mature seedlings were given to Ollukara block Panchayath for planting this saplings at Vellayanipacha.

  • AIDs day Celebration

Nature club, NSS, NCC of St. Thomas College made an awareness programme along with Police Academy Thrissur. The students and police officers were participated in the programme. Students made a placard march along the nearby roads of colleges and gathered at Menachery hall at St. Thomas College on 30/11/19. The programme was inaugurated by District Medical Officer, Thrissur .  Convener Dr. Anto P V, Dr. Joyce Jose, Dr. Joby Paul, Mr. Rames, SI, Police Academy, Dr. Thomas Paul Kattookaran, Vice Principal , St. Thomas College , were present in the function.
