The Department of Computer Science was established in 2001 with the objective of boosting the country’s economic growth by producing innovative ideas and turning them into commercial goods that would benefit the industry.

The second decade of its history was the most proactive one when it transformed itself into an aided postgraduate department with research centre status. During this phase, it has created an innovative academic environment with a distinctive emphasis on the overall development of students. To enhance the learning experience, the department is offering add-on courses focusing on recent trends in computer science, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things, Python, and R programming, thereby enabling the students to excel in this competitive era. Apart from this, the department offers certificate courses for computer professionals for undergraduate students and certificate courses in MATLAB for postgraduate students. Moreover, remedial coaching was introduced for weak students and has been acknowledged and appreciated by parents and students alike. Besides academic courses and soft skills training, research and innovations were given due importance.

The department has a software development team of students, alumni, and teachers, and it has successfully developed many software programs. The first developmental project was that of S-Tracker, a semester management system developed for St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur, Kerala way back in 2013. Later, an online election platform was developed exclusively for the conduct of staff elections at University Technology MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. Furthermore, a Document Management System was developed exclusively for the department, which stores syllabus, regulations, statutes, circulars, letters, etc. from UGC, MHRD, HED, and Calicut University. It, thus, provides a single-window search facility for its students to access the digital contents.

Srishti is the annual techno-cultural festival of the department and has been celebrated since 2011. Every year, a national or international seminar is held to introduce prospective researchers and future software developers to new trends or emerging areas.

With all these measures, it has started to produce high-quality professionals who have gone on to hold key positions in the IT industry across the globe. The placement records of over 66% of its undergraduate outgoing students and more than 25% of its PG students clearing UGC NET examinations are examples of what the department is capable of. Top-notch companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro Technologies, UST Global, Syntel Inc, Infosys, Eureka Forbes, IBPS, CUFOS etc. have lined up to offer jobs to our students.
