Conservation Effort Launched to Protect Critically Endangered Kulavetty Tree Species at Thrissur.*
In a significant step towards environmental conservation, St. Thomas College’s Department of Botany, in collaboration with Alagappanagar Grama Panchayath and supported by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, has launched an initiative to protect the critically endangered tree species Syzygium travancoricum, commonly known as Kulavetty.The event was inaugurated today at the river banks of Manali Puzha, Amballur, by Smt. K. Rajeswari, President of Alagappanagar Grama Panchayath. The inauguration was followed by a presidential address delivered by Panchayat member Sri. Shekaran P.K. The report on the conservation initiative was presented by Smt. Smitha Bhaskar, Assistant Secretary of Alagappanagar Grama Panchayat. Dr. Anto P. V., Project Principal Investigator, provided an in-depth description of the Kulavetty plant, highlighting the importance of conserving this rare species that is on the brink of extinction. The initiative aims not only to protect the Kulavetty tree but also to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation in the region.The event was graced by several dignitaries, including, ward members Adv. Namitha Jose, Smt. Sajana Shibu, Smt. Shilaja K.A, Smt. Aswathy Praveen and Sri. Alfred M.K, Asst. secretary of Varavoor Grampanchayat. MSc students of Botany Department, St. Thomas college, employees of the Grampanchayat and NREGCS workers were also present to lend their support to this critical conservation effort. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Sri. Subhash P.
