On International Women’s Day Observance The Research and PG Department of English, St.Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur conducted ‘International Women’s Day Observance’ on 8th March 2022 in Room No:152 from 11:30 am to 1:00pm. The programme started with a prayer by Chanchal Chacko, student of Second year MA English and Devika Vinod of Second year MA English delivered the welcome address. Dr. Anto Thomas C, HoD of the English Department inaugurated the gathering. Ms. Christina Jose rendered the presidential address. The programme proceeded under the coordination of Dr.M.J.Viju, the programme coordinator and Devika Vinod, the student coordinator. Sandra M Sunil of Second year MA English was the master of ceremony. The prize distribution to the winners of the competitions that were conducted through online platform in connection with the World Teachers’ Day Observance was distributed. The winners of first, second and third positions of the competitions were announced in the programme by Arya K L, second year MA English student and the prizes were distributed by the HoD Dr. Anto Thomas C. Students of First year and Second year MA English had arranged several programmes to commemorate Women’s Day. Sreelakshmi Renjith and Anjitha Mary James of Second year MA English recited ‘A Woman Speaks’ by Audre Lorde and ‘Sthree Sakthi’ of B Sandhya respectively. Haritha K S of Second year MA English gave a speech about Sylvia Plath, the greatest woman writer of 20th century and her works. S Suthara of Second year MA English performed a monoact based on K R Meera’s Malayalam novel ‘Aarachar’. Devika E S and Bhavika E S of First year MA English recited ‘Vanitha Commission ‘of Sugathakumari and ‘Muthassi’ of Balamaniyamma respectively. Rose Martin of First year MA English recited the poem ‘Diving into the Wreck’ by Adrienne Rich. Jerney Varghese of First year MA English rendered a speech on the famous author Kamala Das and her works. The students of First year MA English also performed a skit titled ‘Avalude Chirakukal’ which was based on spreading awareness against the practice of dowry and the importance of education of a woman. The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Aparna P of Second year MA English who thanked principal, HOD, teachers, participants, programme coordinators and those who attended the observance for their presence and exemplary efforts.
