Departments Economics

The department has been giving attention to enhance the academic standard of both teachers as well as students through seminars/workshops/refresher courses, etc. in various topics. The department has taken the initiative in the preparation of the present M.A (Economics) Syllabus of the University of Calicut. Further, sufficient care is being given to identify and finance the economically backward students from the same department and from other departments also. The department aims not only to achieve academic excellence of the students and the staff, but it is also concerned about the overall progress of society through the dissemination of the values of religious harmony, community development etc.  In January - February 2003, the department conducted special coaching in Econometrics to the 3rdsemester M.A. students of our College along with the students of neighbouring Colleges of Thrissur district with the financial assistance of the Kerala Research Programme on Local Level Development (KRPLLD) of the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram. The Dept. Organized a National Conference, 'Planning and Development: Institutions and Markets', in honour of the famous economist, Prof. K. N. Raj, on 2nd and 3rd October, 2004 in association with the International Labour Organisation of the U. N. O., the Planning Commission of Govt. of India, Malcom and Adiseshaiah Trust, the Economic and Political Weekly and other nationally and internationally reputed institutions and agencies. The Conference was attended, among others, by Dr. I. G. Patel and Bimal Jalan (both former Governors of the Reserve Bank of India), Ashok Mitra (former Finance Minister of West Bengal) and leading Indian economists. The proceedings of the Conference are under publication.
