St. Thomas College was a renowned outstanding institution in athletics and football in the University of Madras. The establishment of a 400 meters athletics track in the college ground (Thope Stadium) was the first of its kind in Central Kerala in the 1930's. Shri. Devassy. A. Pallan's - the first Director of Physical Education - contribution to the department, is of paramount significance. A pavilion and a spectator's gallery was built in 1950's with the assistance of the UGC.
The construction of the Indoor Stadium with the assistance of UGC in 1997 started a new era- blessed by His Excellency Mar Joseph Kundukulam and inaugurated by His Excellency Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy. A standard Fitness center with modern fitness facilities was on track within no time. In 1999, a cricket academy was begun. All these facilities are used not only by the students of our college, but by the public. Now this college has training facilities for different sports and games like Swimming, Water Polo, Boxing, Power Lifting, Athletics, Football, Cycling, Hockey, Cricket, Yogasana, Archery, Fencing, Chess, Weight lifting, Best physique etc.
The following members have served as faculty in the Department: - Shri. Devassy. A. Pallan, Prof. C. D. Jose, Prof. Antony. A. Akkara, Prof. E.D. Jose, Prof. Paul. A. Alavathingal and Dr. Sebi Jose. In 2015, the college athletic track and field was modernized to a standard 400 meters, 8 lane track with proper drainage and fine quality protective fence with the assistance from UGC. The Department has produced an astounding number of sports personalities in National and International level competitions. The College has been declared as the “Best College in Sports and Games” in the University of Calicut for many years in succession. In 2017 indoor stadium has renovated and a new tennis court inaugurated in the year.
